Your new bathroom, before you commit to anything

  • The design. A floor plan and photorealistic 3D renders, drawn from a proper measure of your room.
  • The walkthrough. A 360° tour you can move around in on your phone, before anything is ordered.
  • The price. Trades priced and fixed, finishes as allowances until you choose them. How the price works is below.

How it works

  1. 1

    The visit

Mat comes to your place, listens to what is not working, and measures the room. No cost, no pressure.

  2. 2

    Your design, with a price

Plans, 3D renders and the 360° walkthrough, with a price beside them so you know early whether it fits your budget.

  3. 3

    Choose your finishes

Tiles, tapware, vanity, lighting. We help you choose, make any design changes, and turn the price into one fixed quote.

  4. 4

    We build it

Our local build partners do the work on site. Blacktan looks after you and the job from start to finish, and hands you a finished bathroom.

What we draw is what gets built

One bathroom, start to finish. The room as we found it, the 3D concept the owners approved, and the finished job. Finishes can change between render and build as the final selections are made. Here the wall tile did.

  1. The existing bathroom before work started: dark timber vanity, square mirror and a corner bath under the window
    1

    Before

A tired bathroom the owners wanted to bring up to date without moving anything.

  2. Blacktan's 3D concept render of the same bathroom: timber wall-hung vanity, white tiles and a freestanding bath
    2

    Concept

Our 3D render of the same room, so the owners could see it and say yes before anything was ordered.

  3. The finished bathroom, built to the concept: timber vanity, freestanding bath and framed shower
    3

    Finished

The layout, vanity and bath as drawn. The owners chose a different wall tile at selections.

How the price works

Your first price comes with your first design. Three parts: what is fixed, what is an allowance, and what nobody can see yet.

Fixed from the first design

The trades

Building, plumbing and electrical, labour and materials, priced and fixed with your first concept. That part of the price does not move.

Allowances until you choose

The finishes

Tiles, tapware, vanity, flooring and lighting sit as allowances until you choose them. Then it becomes one fixed price for the whole job.

Your own contingency

What nobody can see

Hidden rot or old framing cannot be priced until the walls are open, so we do not pad for it. Hold at least 10% in reserve, and approve any extra first.

Who turns up

Mat Hartigan, Blacktan’s founder, does the visit, the design and the pricing, and stays in touch with you right through the build. Blacktan designs renovations across New Zealand, and now builds bathrooms here in Invercargill.

The quality of their work is excellent and their efficiency is second to none. Matt and Lisa are a pleasure to work with and genuinely go above and beyond. Can’t recommend them highly enough.

Before you book

Is the design really free? What’s the catch?

Yes, and there is no catch. We price the renovation alongside the design, so the free design pays for itself on the jobs that go ahead. If you decide not to renovate, there is nothing to pay. If you would rather build it with another builder, you can buy the plans for $750 including GST.

Is the visit a sales pitch?

No. It is a measure and a conversation about what is not working. Nobody asks you to sign anything on the day.

Who actually does the building?

We have partnered with local Invercargill builders who deliver the build. Blacktan designs the bathroom, prices it, and looks after you and the job from the first visit to handover. You are never handed off to someone else.

Is my job too small?

No. Big or small, tiled or acrylic, a full change of layout or a straight swap of the shower, vanity and toilet. If it is a bathroom, we want it.

Will I need a building consent?

Sometimes. Replacing fixtures where they sit often does not; moving plumbing or anything structural often does. We work it out in the design, and if a consent is needed we prepare and lodge it and build the inspections into the job.

What if you find rot once the walls are open?

Hidden rot or old framing cannot be priced until the walls are open, and often there is nothing there, so we do not build a guess into your price. Hold your own contingency of at least 10% of the project cost. If something turns up, you see the cost and approve it before that work happens.

How long will I be without a bathroom?

Weeks, not days. It depends on whether fixtures are moving and what demolition uncovers. We go through the timing with you before the build starts.
